Begur's Fira d'Indians takes over the Plaça de l'Església and the Plaça Pella i Forgas each year, and it is not exactly a market: it is a festival of several days celebrating the town's indiano past. During the 19th century Begur saw mass emigration to Cuba, and those who came back wealthy — the "americanos" or "indianos" — left behind the colonial-style houses that still shape its streets.
The programme turns on music and on the street as a stage. The first night, in the courtyard of the Escoles Velles, holds the main concert and is the busiest. The rest of the weekend brings Caribbean rhythms, habaneras and period re-enactments, with parades and shows that need no ticket. For a more reflective side there are exhibitions, talks and round tables on the indiano legacy.
The fair opens on Friday from 17:00 to 23:00 and on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 23:00.
