The Born market is Ciutadella's long-standing street market. It is held on Mondays and Fridays all year round in the Plaça des Born, the town's main square, presided over by the town hall and with the obelisk in the middle, at the end of the old town that looks out over the harbour. The municipal by-law sets two different opening times depending on the season: 8:30 to 15:00 in summer and 9:30 to 13:30 in winter, when the customers are mostly locals.

What's on sale

The by-law authorises textiles, crafts, ornaments, footwear, leather goods and antiques. In practice clothing and footwear take up most of the site, with the traditional Menorcan avarcas among the things visitors look for, and the antiques and decoration stalls give it a character of its own, beyond that of an ordinary clothes market.

Visiting the market

The market shares the square with the cafés of the Born, so shopping combines easily with a stop. The long summer hours leave time to take it slowly, but in winter the window is short and the stalls start packing up soon after one. Ciutadella has two more markets during the week: the farmers' market in the Plaça de la Llibertat on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and the night markets from June to September.
