Ciutadella's farmers' market is held on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8:00 to 14:00 in the Plaça de la Llibertat, next to the municipal market hall, and sells only produce from Menorcan farms. It is the counterpart to the Born market: where that one has the textiles and the crafts, this one has the food. It runs all year, with no high or low season.

What's on sale

The by-law restricts the stalls to what comes off Menorcan land: cheeses, fruit, vegetables and greens, traditional cured meats, bread and pastries, plants, wine, liqueurs and honey. Mahón-Menorca cheese is the most recognisable thing on the tables, and much of the produce is sold directly by the people who grow or make it.

Visiting the market

Saturday mornings are the busiest, with locals and visitors together; Wednesdays are quieter and better for talking to the producers. It is worth arriving before ten if you are after cheese or pastries, because the most sought-after items sell out early, and worth bringing cash: not every stall takes cards. The cafés with terraces on the square itself make it easy to take a break without going far.
